Polished concrete is becoming the most popular form of no-wax concrete flooring material in residential homes. Recent advances in concrete polishing equipment and techniques, we are now able to grind concrete floors into a variation of gloss. This process provides a long lasting, low maintenance, elegant look. Based solely on the superior durability and performance its plain to see why more retail warehouses and office facilities are opting for polished concrete as an alternative to marble, granite, tile, linoleum, hardwoods and laminates. Even home owners are catching on the smooth appeal of concrete as a finished surface because of the many benefits.

Some benefits for polished floor include:
  • The durability and long life cycle of polished concrete allows the owner to save more money in the long run.
  • There is less maintenance for polished concrete in comparison to tiles and carpet.
  • There are no grout joints or fibers to collect dust and allergens.
  • Using existing concrete as finished flooring is more cost effective than purchasing subflooring, tiles or hardwood.
  • Maintenance of polished concrete is easier because polished concrete floors are one continuous type of surface. Polished floors require only occasional damp mopping or floor maintainers with a neutral based cleaner to keep the surface area clean.
  • Concrete floors are hard to wear down. Even in high traffic areas the surface can stand up to the everyday wear and tear. This is true of retail or even industrial work spaces.
  • Polished concrete floors eliminate the need for messy waxes or coatings.
  • Mechanically polished concrete is resistant to marks of forklift truck tires, staining from oil and chemical spills.
  • Polished concrete eliminates issues that arise with other flooring materials that seal off concrete. By allowing the concrete to breathe it does not suffer under materials such as Paint, Vinyl and tile.
  • The glean off shiny polished flooring is important for facilities that want to project a bright, clean, professional image.
  • Polished concrete saves energy by reducing artificial lighting requirements.

Types of polished concrete

The condition of the concrete floor may limit the type of polish that can be used, dependent on the condition. For example in most cases the radiant look of cream polish cannot be achieved because of the amount of glue or coatings that need to be removed. This happens because when grinding the coating or glue off it the cream from the floor is also removed. If this look isn’t achievable for our client they will be informed upon consultation.

Polished concrete flooring comes in a wide range of sheen gradients, from matte to a glossy mirror-like finish. These gradients are achieved dependent on the diamond grit used to polish the floor. The diamond grit also allows for different amounts of aggregate exposure, ranging from cream finish with no exposure to a full aggregate look.

Cream Polish
Cream polish achieves the smoothest and most consistent sheen possible. It accepts stains and dyes more readily and consistently.
Salt and Pepper (light aggregate)
Of all of the types of polished concrete the salt and pepper look is the most achievable look when refinishing concrete flooring. This polish willingly accepts color and stains and gleam with a sparkling shine. The downfall of this polish is that it may expose cracks and small holes in the finished floor.
Exposed Aggregate Polish
The least common polish because it is more expensive. The expenses involve the higher cost associated with the extensive wear of the diamond tool used in polishing the floor as well as the cost of additional labor. Aggregate polish is unique and can make the entire floor look uniform even if some areas were previously polished.
